Google called JetBrains Kotlin the main programming language for Android developers

Google called JetBrains Kotlin the main programming language for Android developers

Google at the conference for developers I/O 2019 announced that now the Kotlin programming language from the company JetBrains will be a priority for developing applications for the Android operating system. All new API and Jetpack libraries will be published first on Kotlin, and only then in other languages.

“Android development will increasingly focus on Kotlin. Many new Jetpack APIs and components will be offered first for Kotlin. If you are starting a new project, you should write it on Kotlin. Code written in Kotlin often means much less code for you to write, to test, or maintain. In collaboration with the Jetbrains and the Kotlin Foundation, we continue to invest in tools, documents, training and events to make Kotlin even easier to learn and use,” says a Google blog.

Less code to write

Back at the I/O 2017 conference, Google announced for the first time support for Kotlin in its IDE, Android Studio. This was a surprise, considering that Java has long remained the preferred language for developing Android applications. Only a few announcements at the conference that year received more applause. Over the past two years, Kotlin’s popularity has only increased.

According to Google, more than 50% of professional Android developers use this language to develop their applications, and in the latest survey of Stack Overflow developers, it is considered the fourth most popular programming language in the world.

“We are announcing that the next big step we are taking is that Kotlin will be our main goal,” said Chet Haase, engineer of the Android UI Toolkit at Google.

We understand that not everyone still uses Kotlin, but we believe that you should try,” Haase continues. – You may have good reasons to continue to use the programming languages C ++ and Java, and this is perfectly normal. They are not going anywhere.

Recall the programming language Kotlin developed by JetBrains. JetBrains is an international company that makes development tools for Java, Kotlin, C #, C ++, Ruby, Python, PHP, JavaScript. The company was founded in 2000. The main office of the company is located in Prague.

Microsoft bought the developer of the leading operating system for IoT

Microsoft bought the developer of the leading operating system for IoT

Microsoft acquired Express Logic, a company known as the developer of the specialized ThreadX operating system for managing small and low-power electronic devices.

The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but it is reasonable to assume that the price offered for Express Logic was high, given the important place occupied by the software technologies of this small enterprise in the ecosystem of connected devices.

ThreadX software can be found literally everywhere: it controls the operation of smart electric lamps and production process control systems. This OS was installed even in the Deep Impact spacecraft launched by NASA in 2005 to study comets.

OS ThreadX development Express Logic has more than 6.2 billion installations. Thus, according to VDC Research, it is one of the most popular RTOS in the world.

Microsoft writes that the Internet of Things sensors are being introduced into almost everything, from industrial equipment to consumer devices, and increasingly, these devices are connected to the cloud. According to Gartner, by 2020 the number of connected devices will exceed 20 billion.
In April 2018, Microsoft announced that it would invest $ 5 billion in the Internet of Things and intellectual peripherals over the next four years. Funds are invested in products such as Azure Sphere, Azure Digital Twins, Azure IoT Edge, Azure Maps and Azure IoT Central. For development in this area, Microsoft has established partnerships with DJI, SAP, PTC, Qualcomm and Carnegie Mellon University.

Where can Express Logic solutions be used?

Microsoft notes that the market has developed a demand for technology to support environments with limited resources that require security, and this is due to the popularity of ThreadX. Express Logic solutions are used by manufacturers of various products, from low-capacity sensors, such as light bulbs and temperature sensors, to air conditioners, medical and network devices. Microsoft claims that Express Logic solutions help bring these products to market faster.

Express Logic systems are also suitable for devices with high limitations, for example, battery-powered and having less than 64 KB of flash memory. Every year, 9 billion microcontroller-based devices are manufactured and deployed in the world — Microsoft is going to promote Express Logic systems in this market.

How will Microsoft use the product?

Through the acquisition of Express Logic, Microsoft expects to gain access to billions of new connected terminals, as well as increase the number of devices that can easily connect to Azure. ThreadX should complement the Azure Sphere – Microsoft’s mainstream security offer for microcontrollers. Azure Sphere is an OS for Linux kernel-based Internet of things applications.

Ultimately, ThreadX should be one of the real-time data processing options on Azure Sphere devices. In addition, devices based on ThreadX will be able to connect to the Azure IoT Edge service, if the solution of the Internet of Things requires boundary computing capabilities. Azure IoT Edge is an Azure Artificial Intelligence and Analytics service on IoT devices.

Microsoft promotes the Azure Sphere as a solution for the most secure client connections to the cloud, but the Azure Sphere does not work on devices with limited capabilities. In these cases, Microsoft will recommend using ThreadX RTOS, and not any other RTOS, since the Express Logic solution has additional certificates, in addition, it can be connected to Azure IoT Hub out of the box.

Trend Micro has published a study showing the threats of production networks

Trend Micro has published a study showing the threats of production networks

Trend Micro Incorporated has announced a new study that demonstrates the threats facing production networks that are still using outdated technology, including risks to intellectual property and production processes.

The report “Ensuring the security of intelligent factories: threats to production environments in the era of Industry 4.0” describes the security aspects of a new era for manufacturing based on IoT and connections worldwide. Manufacturers are investing heavily in the convergence of traditional operating technology (OT) with IT networks in 2019, adding new technologies to environments that are still vulnerable to problems for more than 10 years, such as Conficker (a computer worm).

“Industry 4.0 offers unprecedented opportunities to increase productivity, improve process efficiency and implement on-demand production, but also significantly changes the risk model of threats to these sites,” said Steve Kuen, executive vice president of network protection and hybrid cloud security for Trend Micro. . “As shown in this study, the convergence of IT and OT can unwittingly have a serious impact on production lines and lead to the loss of IP and competitive advantage. Trend Micro will continue to support the industry by providing innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence to protect important business data and processes throughout the connected world. “

The report highlights the unique triple threat faced by manufacturing, including the risks associated with IT, OT and IP. Previously isolated operating networks connected to the IT network to increase efficiency, but this causes unsafe proprietary protocols and potentially outdated OT equipment, which is often not corrected often enough because of its criticality. There is a sharp discrepancy between the significant operations performed by these devices and the fact that they have been working for years with known vulnerabilities.

According to Gartner, “the networks and assets of OT, as well as their security implications, have not been discovered and managed for many years. As a result, existing OT networks are not segmented using a set of production protocols, unidentified assets, legacy systems and devices. These industrial components have many unprotected communication channels with corporate / IT networks and use different vendor architectures and security standards. ”

In addition to supporting legacy infrastructure with known flaws, these systems detect new vulnerabilities more often than ever before. Zero-day vulnerabilities acquired in man-machine interfaces (HMI) of industrial control systems increased by more than 200 percent in 2018 compared with the previous year.

Thus, manufacturers are subject to both targeted and conventional malware, including attacks on cryptocurrency, which can damage key production processes, consuming computational power and causing network latency. Extortionists are also a serious threat to manufacturers if an attack affects production.

To help mitigate the impact of Industry 4.0 threats, Trend Micro recommends that manufacturers be aware of the basics of cybersecurity, such as restricting user access and disabling directory listings, and identifying and prioritizing key assets for protection.

JetBrains released a series of updates for their IDE products

JetBrains released a series of updates for their IDE products

The Czech IT company JetBrains has released an update 2019.1 for its development environments IntelliJ IDEA, WebStorm, PyCharm, CLion and GoLand.

IntellilJ IDEA 2019.1 looks for switch blocks that can be simplified in Java 12, and automatically convert them as needed. The return trip is possible.

Another new feature is the Recent Locations pop-up window, which shows an overview of all recently visited areas of code in chronological order. Developers can search for code snippets in a window, using either the body of the code, the file name, or bread crumbs.

There are also some innovations for users in the cloud. The IDE now allows you to debug a Docker container created from a Dockerfile or Docker Compose. Anyone who works with the Kubernetes container orchestration can now download custom resource definitions from external sources. However, this is currently possible only for local files. At a simpler level, the IDE now has the ability to debug Java applications that run inside Docker containers created from Dockerfile or using Docker compose.

New databases are supported: Greenplum, Vertica and Apache Hive. Other additions include support for Java 12 switch expressions. The Kotlin plugin has been updated to v1.3.21

The environment of JetBrains C and C ++ Clion has also changed. Now it supports the ClangFormat tool if the proprietary formatter JetBrains does not do this for you. JetBrains also said it uses Clang to provide improved and more detailed error messages. Now Clion “keeps to the naming scheme you provide” and will use it in autocomplete, generate, and refactor code. Name conventions can also be used in the editor.

Like its Java colleague at JetBrains, Clion has also updated the themes, and users can now create their own individual styles.

In addition, JetBrains also released a second preview of access to TeamCity 2019.1, its CI / CD platform. The latest update supports GitLab merge requests, which can now be created automatically and filtered by author and target branch.

It also adds “improved scalability options” using the “Run Assemblies” node presented last year, exiting all sessions if a user password is hacked and YouTrack is constantly authenticating the token.

More details about all the updates can be found in the blog JetBrains

ManageEngine expands self-service password management

ManageEngine expands self-service password management

ManageEngine announced that ADSelfService Plus, its integrated Active Directory (AD) solution for self-service passwords and single sign-on, supports self-service passwords management for Linux end users. ADSelfService Plus now allows end users to reset their passwords and unlock their accounts in AD from the Linux machine login screen.

When end users forget passwords, their performance decreases because a technician or administrator needs a long time to verify identity and reset passwords. According to Forrester Research estimates, the average cost of resetting a single password performed by the support service is about $ 70, while Gartner estimates that between 20% and 50% of all support calls fall to a password reset.

To avoid this cost, organizations must provide end users with the ability to quickly reset their passwords independently, regardless of the support service. This option should be available when users most often realize that they have forgotten their passwords — the login screen of desktops or laptops, regardless of the platform they use.

“The self-service solution with password management can solve this problem, but it will be effective only if it is available to all users in the organization – no matter what computer or mobile platform they use,” said Partiban Paramasivam, director of ADSelfService Plus product management. “The latest version of ADSelfService Plus provides end users with the ability to reset their passwords from their Linux computers, in addition to Windows, macOS and mobile devices running Android and iOS. This provides all users with access to self-service. the ability to reset the password 24/7″.

Using the ADSelfService Plus solution, companies get a cost-effective way to reduce password-related requests and reduce support department workload while maintaining user productivity. The key points of managing self-service passwords for Linux in ADSelfService Plus include:

-Support multi-factor authentication methods, including email-based OTP, SMS-based OTP, Duo Security, RSA SecurID, Google Authenticator, and biometric authentication, for increased security.

-Ability to notify end users and IT administrators via email and SMS, as well as automatically create a request in the support service solution after a successful password reset.

-Support real-time password synchronization to synchronize passwords in Active Directory, Office 365, G Suite, Salesforce, and other corporate applications.

-Support for blacklist of passwords and other advanced password policy settings.

-Audit reports to monitor who uses the self-service functionality, where and when.

ADSelfService Plus is an Active Directory-integrated password management and self-service solution for single sign-on. This system offers opportunities for self-management of passwords, setting reminders for the expiration of passwords, self-updating of the catalog, use of a password synchronizer in various platforms, as well as single sign-on for cloud applications.

ManageEngine is a division of Zoho Corporation, which includes software solutions for managing IT in small and medium businesses. Zoho Corporation offers a wide range of solutions for corporate use. Zoho Corporation software is divided into 5 main areas: data center management, network performance management, Windows infrastructure management, security management, and IT service management.

A full-featured 30-day trial version is available for download.

Maxon has released a test performance CPU CINEBENCH R20

Maxon has released a test performance CPU CINEBENCH R20

Over the past years, Cinebench R15 has been one of the most popular benchmarks for determining the “raw” processing power of the processor. It is expected that in more than five years since its release this test has become outdated, and the speed of the CPU has grown significantly. Maxone CINEBENCH R15 has been one of the main CPU reviews since its release back in September 2013.

All this prompted the Maxon developer company to prepare a new version of the tool – Cinebench R20. He lost the OpenGL subtest, which measures GPU performance, but the processor benchmark uses a more complex scene, rendering which will require 8 times more CPU processing power and four times more RAM than for Cinebench R15. Please note that the rating scale has also undergone significant changes, so the results from R15 and R20 are not comparable.

CinebenchR20 uses the same powerful 3D engine as Cinema 4D Release 20 (Cinema 4DR20) to accurately assess the performance of the CPU rendering on various systems and platforms.

According to the creators, the Cinebench R20 uses new features of modern Intel and AMD processors, as well as the technology of ray tracing Intel Embree, which allows you to visualize the same scene twice as fast. A fresh benchmark will make them sweat both existing and future processors, allowing them to evaluate the effectiveness of the cooling system, and whether the computer is able to handle complex 3D tasks.

Cinebench R20 is available in versions for PCs running Windows and Apple Macs.

Cinebench is a cross-platform test suite that evaluates the hardware capabilities of your computer.
