Tharp gives Sutton a clear, blunt, narrative voice but when it comes to character development, Sutter stays the same person from point A to point B, even with inserting "Life is a big, screwed-up joke with its ups and downs.

Aimee was probably the one redeeming quality about this book.
They make eye contact, and Aimee suppresses a smile. So I would give this book 3.5 stars. I don't know definitely won't read this book again....but I guess it was worth reading once =\There's that old literary saw that says if the main character of a book doesn't change, the book is a failure. But on the way to that arguably disappointing ending, The Spectacular Now captures the beauty and scariness and lacerating intensity of first love, and for that you forgive it everything. Everyone knows that if you want a good time, you call Sutter Keely. He’s the guy with a bar in his boot, enough whisky in his flask to go round and he doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘embarrassment’. Aimee attempts to comfort Sutter and says she loves him, but Sutter, angry and drunk, snaps at her.
