I became fond of the series several years and haven't got bored by any of the stories yet. Disappeared. It tends to repeat witness or interviewee questioning/answers over and over and over again. Although she has blood on her hands, she claims she is innocent. I'm so happy. And the shaken woman insists it all happened so quickly, she never saw the man’s face.Although he is a witness after the fact, Rutledge persuades the Yard to give him the inquiry, since he’s on the scene. I need to feel that old tension which, sadly, is now missing completely. This book took place in the 1920’s...there were still fires warming old English houses and cottages and cars that had to … It was his beloved sister Frances' wedding day and his duty, since both their parents are dead, was to walk her down the aisle and give her hand to the husband-to-be. The author(s) take(s) the reader through every step that Rutledge takes as an investigator, so everything is foreshadowed and there are plenty of red herrings and places for the reader's imagination to go as Rutledge works to solve the mystery. It tends to repeat witness or interviewee questioning/answers over and over and over again. A mother would accuse a 6 month old baby of murder? And someone years later believes her? But there is no trace of him. Lost in thoughts of the war, he is forced to brake suddenly when he sees a woman in the road standing over a body. It was his beloved sister Frances' wedding day and his duty, since both their parents are dead, was to walk her down the aisle and give her hand to the husband-to-be. Sometimes with the very same hostile characters who instead of helping the police find their son's or their friend's murderer, feel the need to berate Ian instead. As things come together, nothing seems like too much of a coincidence, because the author(s) show(s) all the detective's work along the way, but things only rarely seem bogged down. He is driving down the road and comes upon a car stopped in the middle of the road with a woman standing over a man’s body and her hands are covered in blood. Charles Todd is the author of the Inspector Rutledge mysteries, the Bess Crawford mysteries, and two stand-alone novels. Not wishing to return to London, Rutledge manages to get himself named lead in the investigation. His guilt?) I have found my narrator to fill my deep Ralph Cosham (Louise Penny's Gamache series narrator) void!! In point of fact, he gets called out and insulted to his purpose, placement, results, associations- all of those. In this case the book seems full of clues that turn out to be red herrings. Both this series, and the Todd's terrific "Bess Crawford" series, are highly recommended. This was so fantastic! Highly recommend! What happened on the battlefield in World War I literally haunts Ian Rutledge. Perhaps the vilest bad mother of all time figures in this story, the mother of the 1st murder victim. The solution will really please book people .At loose ends after his sister's wedding, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge is driving at night with no particular destination in mind when he comes upon another vehicle stopped in the road. Is his death retribution? The spirit or ghost of Hamish makes only a few appearances this time which evidently means Rutledge is well on the way to recovery, or at least acceptance, of his horrific war experiences. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. If I remember correctly wasn't Melinda Bess's mother? He is happy for his sister but cannot help feeling melancholy about how her marriage will change his relationship with her. I need to see Ian strongly challenge back at Hamish, or feel the shaky and tenuous ground under his feet caused by Hamish's questions as he moves to solve a murder. Again, the intrigue is interesting and I guess it's one of the best so far.First Sentence: Ian Rutledge drove through the night, his mind only partly on the road unwinding before him.One of the best entries in this good series. It feels frozen as if the books may go on without knowing Rutledge any more. I don’t know how the authors continue to produce such quality mysteries time after time. Soon it will be up to Rutledge to piece together the strange specific of the murder.I found The Gate Keeper to be a more enjoyable book to read than. This book is one of the better reads, in this most excellent(and one of my favorite) series. And once again the killer is introduced in the last chapters which leaves 3/4 of the book a red herring. Anyway, this is a good mystery, well-written, but one of many others, with nothing to distinguish it. The secret of the gate keeper remains too long a secret. That being said, if you're not concerned with the complexity of Rutledge, then the mysteries can be read as stand alones. I know, first world problem. Wolf Pit, his village, has a notorious history: in Medieval times, the last wolf in England was killed there. Beyond her, those who knew him thought Wentworth, a World War I veteran, to be respectable and admirable.Meanwhile, Larry Reed, the local inspector who lost out on the case thanks to Rutledge, clashes with Ian over the likelihood that the shooting was random.
