The area was an early Australian landing place when humans migrated from the islands of Southeast Asia and New Guinea, at least 40,000 years ago, during a time of lower sea levels. Located in the heart of Kakadu National Park, the 1,228 hectare Koongarra area was excluded from Kakadu's original boundaries in 1979 because of its potential uranium resources.Koongarra's stunning woodlands and rock art sites lie in the shadow of Nourlangie Rock, one of Kakadu's most popular visitor destinations.Last year Jeffrey flew to Paris to make a personal - and successful plea - to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to declare Koongarra as part of the Kakadu World Heritage Area.Today the Australian Government is working with the Northern Land Council to finalize the legal steps needed to make Koongarra a part of Kakadu National Park.
